What are the benefits of Ashtanga yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is a form of yoga that originated in India. It is a vigorous style of yoga that is practised in a heated space and focuses on synchronizing breath with movement. The name Ashtanga means “eight limbs”, which are the eight parts of the body that are connected to the ground, or steps that are used to describe the eight steps involved in Ashtanga Yoga practice: Yama (social conduct), Niyama (self-discipline), asana (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), and dhyana (meditation).
The Eight limbs are broken down into four categories: Yama, Niyama, asana and pranayama. Yamas are five ethical guidelines that need to be followed. They are ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing) and brahmacharya (celibacy). Niyamas are five observances that need to be performed. They are Saucha (cleanliness), Santosha (contentment), Tapasya (austerity), Svadhyaya (self-study) and Ishvarapranidhana (surrendering to god).
Ashtanga Yoga was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois and his student, T.K.V Desikachar, who were both students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who taught Hatha Yoga from 1924-1979 and was an expert in Indian medicine and Ayurveda (traditional Indian system).
